According to reports, approximately 8 million abandoned houses in Japan are scattered around the outskirts of many cities. Now, many of these unoccupied are being listed on online databases for sale.
The list includes thousands of abandoned houses in decent conditions that are being offered for a tiny fee, reports Insider.
The government is also offering subsidies to encourage potential buyers to invest in the renovation of these houses.
The aging population of Japan is one of the primary factors for the availability of abandoned houses.
A government report said many people are either moving to retirement homes are dying at a rapid rate. As a result, their houses are left empty and there are not enough people to fill them.
In Japan, more than one in four people are aged 65 years and above, and as the deaths continue to outpace births, the condition is expected to worsen in the next few years.
The culture of superstition is also a contributing factor in the availability of abandoned houses. Properties that are associated with deaths, suicides, and murders are considered to be unlucky in Japan.
