Among the 23 international placement offers till now, 11 are from four Japanese companies. Rakuten, another Japanese firm, is expected to join the placements from Friday. The five Japanese firms are expected to account for more than 50% of the total international placements this year with Germany making its debut with a recruiter making two international offers.

IIT-Kharagpur witnessed its largest Japanese presence in the final placements this year. “Five Japanese corporations are participating in the phase I placement session, which continues till December 15. On Saturday, the Day 1of the recruitment, Mercari Japan led the pack with six international offers. On Day 2, two more corporations, Bizreach and Yahoo Japan made three and one offers each for positions in Japan. Works Applications, a Tokyo-based firm recruited for a single profile on day-3. Rakuten is likely to recruit for several positions too,” said a senior placement cell official in IIT-Kharagpur.

Another important trend, the official said, is the emergence of Germany as an international placement destination. Two students have been offered jobs in Germany by KPIT, sources said. Till now USA and the UK have been the most-coveted destinations for international positions. This year, however, these countries have taken a backseat.

“Now the industrial sector in Japan is looking forward to attracting talents from India. With Japanese firms showing significant interest in recruiting graduates from IIT-Kgp, a career in Japan is likely to get popular here,” said G P Raja Sekhar, placement chairperson, Career Development Center (CDC) aqt IIT-Kharagpur.
